Keith House
1900 S Prairie Ave | Neighborhood: Prairie District
The thirty-plus room mansion at 1900 S. Prairie Avenue was completed in 1870 and includes a coach house and servants’ quarters. Designed by J. R. Roberts in the Victorian Chateauesque style, combining classical and French motifs, the house has been in the same family since 1977 and has been lovingly restored with historical accuracy. The Keith House - named for the banker and merchant Elbridge Keith, who built the home - is one of five remaining original mansions in the heart of the Prairie Avenue Historic District. Many people have been drawn to the neighborhood because of its history, beauty, vitality and ideal location. The residence has been owner-occupied for most of its history, and in recent decades has been made into several apartments for the current family.
